Video description: The ‘Innovations Methodologies for Defense Challenges” or IMDC conference has been held annually since 2017 and provides a collaborative and stimulating platform for security experts, academics, design theorists, practitioners and educators to collectively share, present and exchange the latest ideas and practices concerning design. Design is considered at a ‘meta-level’ spanning all fields and disciplines, with the IMDC taking a closer focus on designing for security affairs, contexts and within warfare settings. The 2019 IMDC conference was hosted by Lancaster University (Security Lancaster department), Lancaster, United Kingdom from February 26th to February 28th, 2019. Collaborating and associated organizations included the Canadian Forces College, the Archipelago of Design (nonprofit design academic organization; see www.militaryepistemology.com for more), as well as the Joint Special Operations University. All lectures, panels, exercises and official events at the IMDC were recorded with the written consent of all participants for subsequent academic utilization and further design discourse and education. All opinions reflect those of the speakers and participants and in no way reflect the official positions of their organization, university, military branch, or government agency. Security Lancaster provided the raw video footage from these events to “Think JSOU” as part of the collaboration agreement so that these lectures could be uploaded for public access and further academic outreach. These videos were recorded at Lancaster and JSOU has the permission of Lancaster University and all speakers involved to upload and maintain this content while not taking any ownership or responsibility for the content. This design lecture is from the IMDC 2019 conference is a panel discussion where Major, Schwagler and Beaulieu-Brossard present to the audience in 15 minute portions while Dr. Graicer facilitates a Q&A session with the live audience on the topic of military design education. This lecture was recorded live at the IMDC in Lancaster. This video is approximately 42 minutes in length and does have a Q&A portion. This is part of the 2019 IMDC lecture series and is identified as “IMDC 2019 Lecture 10” in the full series nomenclature. The audio portion of Mr. Schwagler’s presentation was cut due to an AV issue, however his comments during the Q&A were recovered.
