The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has arguably applied reflexive approaches, for example some aspects of design thinking, since the early part of the twenty-first century. It has done so in areas as diverse as joint professional military education courses, joint planning doctrine and Army concept publications. The term ‘reflexive approach’, like the term ‘design thinking’, has not been explicitly used by the ADF in public fora, however. As a result of this situation, it has been observed by Jackson (in a 2017 paper linked at The Archipelago) regarding design thinking that the ADF has often “done it” without necessarily knowing that it has.
