Colombian Armed Forces

The Colombian Armed Forces faced the necessity to reconsider warring practices to adapt to the changing character of the long lasting Colombian war (1964 – present). Current and past Colombian officers were born in a state of war and gathered unmatched direct experiences of war during their military careers. Individuals and institutions changed their intellectual frameworks and generated innovative concepts, practices and doctrines in the midst of half-century of battles. Allowing officers to share their memories and analyses in their own terms – as notes from the field – offers a rare window into their experience. The tacit knowledge produced by those officers is of special interest to this project as testimonies of lifelong adaptation and transformation through experiencing directly the radical contingencies of war.
